Chuck Norris Doesn’t Hate America After All

September 25th, 2009 by skippy

So it turns out that upon closer examination, Chuck is actually advocating purchasing a tea -stained flag, which is made with cotton that has been tea stained, for an old-timey look. Which should probably be a lesson to people to not write blog posts when they’re in a bad mood, or at the very least, to read things very carefully, to avoid looking like a jack-ass. Granted his article is still “underpants on head” stupid, but he doesn’t actually call for the flag to be desecrated.

Why does desecrating the flag mean that he hates the US in the first place? Yes it is disrespectful to your country and servicemen etc but really your wound a bit too tight in my opinion. Don’t make a big deal of it, all it is is a piece of cloth with a pretty pattern. Chill out mate!

I’m a Scot turned Canadian, so I’ve had to learn to translate Americanisms for the rest of the world. I’ll try to give this one a stab.

The U.S. flag is, to her citizens, the representation of all that is holy and honourable about the country. It is to an American what the cross is to a Catholic. Spitting on the flag is similar to spitting on a cross, to them. It’s disrespectful, to say the least.

While the rest of us are proud of our flags and countries, we’re not quite as .. I hate to say brainwashed with patriotism towards our flags, but I can’t think of a better way to put it at this hour.

Which is why we Canuckleheads got so cheesed when they hung our flag upside down on three seperate occassions in a short period of time. (It’s a maple leaf, how hard is it to figure out?) While WE don’t put the same significance in, we KNOW Americans do!

And while not all Americans put the same weight to their flag, those that don’t should realize that the majority DO. Y’all don’t dip the cross in tea. :)

Generally, yeah. Also, a quick question, here flying the Stars and Stripes upside down is a distress signal. Is that maybe what was happening with your flag or were they just being morons?

Shadowydreamer reply on September 28th, 2009 9:21 am:

Well, considering our flag was hanging beside there’s at sporting events and then a military ceremony and then sporting events again.. I’m thinking they were either being morons or jackasses. :)

    Rick R. reply on September 29th, 2009 1:36 pm:

    Just being morons.

It’s a little different when someone hangs the Union Jack upside down (yes, there’s a right side up {grin}).

But a friggin’s Maple Leaf? Pointy end up ain;t rocket science.

Of course, in the color party’s defense, it’s not as easy as getting teh US flag right — Clip the blue end to the top halyard.

Of course, if you HAVE run up some colors upside down, you really should fix it straightaway, even if you’re raising them at a ceremony. And since you’re supposed to watch it go up, it shouldn’t be two hard to figure out you screwed it up early on in the process.

Signalist reply on October 28th, 2011 1:53 pm:

OT, but I have witnessed a military ceremony where a senior lieutenant (somewhere between 1st lieutenant and captain) who was raising the ‘war flag’ (as in the military version of the national flag), upside down, while the battalion was saluting it, guess in the past he had only raised ‘the normal’ flag and didn’t think about the slight difference between the two. There was the regimental march playing, and when the music stopped the senior lieutenant was slightly confused, but then looked up and started taking the flag down, the second time he got it right.

    And now that I remember it, remember some years ago when this one Danish cartoonist though it would be funny to draw a picture of prophet Mohammed, resulting in Middle-Eastern folks going berserk, boycotting Danish products and burning flags, you know, the regular everyday entertainment there? Couple of things;

    1) http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/turkish_muslims_accidentally_burn_swiss_flag.jpg

    2) the fact that in Denmark the practice of buring ‘Dannebrog’, the Danish flag, actually was in the past considered the only proper way to dispose of a worn out or a desecrated flag.

And I agree that Dear Chuck is simply the Right-Wing version of Liberal Hollywood idiots. Sigh. So entertaining, so quick to jump to conclusions.

Oi Stonewolf! Diss the Queen all you want, us Brits have a sense of humour. Just don’t diss the good old cuppa. Or we’ll come back that way and kick your arses properly, and this time no pesky war with France will distract us ;)

By “good old cuppa” I’m assuming you mean tea, being all Britishy like you are. And there’s a reason we tossed all your crummy old tea off the boat 200 years ago.

So bring it on Kitty, we’ll even give you a hand and go to war with France ourselves. As soon as we overrun them we’ll pull a Reverse Normandy, see how you like that! Once we’re done with you we’ll nuke the Welsh ourselves and do a proper job of it, not pop a off a few firecrackers, call it good and go for tea.

So what do you say old chum, you ready for round three? ;p

Please don’t nuke the Welsh. Not because I like them and their sheep rogering ways, but given the yanks measure of accuracy the bomb will probably hit my house instead. We’re busy enough fighting ourselves without foreign nukes coming into it.

    FOR QUEEN AND TETLEY!!!!!!

Captcha: Svengali crackpot-ish. Who’s Svengali and why are you forcing me to type slanderous remarks about him?

Having re-read Norris’ article, I can see the confusion. Anybody who didn’t know about the ‘tea-stained’ flag (most Americans + the rest of the world) would think he intended you to stain it.

Patriotism is not about empty gestures. Norris is, like most raconteurs, careful not to offer anything that could be considered constructive input to the debate. There are lots of quotes, because this kind of speech is always littered with them. If you’ve got nothing to say, best grab some legitimacy from the undisputed figures of history.

    So here’s a quote:

“People who enjoy waving flags don’t deserve to have one.” Banksy, Wall and Piece.

Captcha: Refute Ployes – Capthcha says it best again.
