Time to Play Cowboy

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Around a year ago I got a great job offer to go and work on an MMO based off a well known property.  I accepted the offer, and moved to Arizona.  The company was great, the people have been awesome, and I found that I really enjoy living in the Phoenix area.  Except for the heat of course. (Most places have four seasons.  Arizona has two.  Hot, and Sun-Blasted Hellscape.)

But me and my wife are expecting two children.  We don’t have the built-in support network of friends and family that you tend to build up when you’ve spent a long time in one place and had a chance to set down roots.

And as much as I like the place where I live, and I like what I do, I don’t get to make decisions based on what I like any more.  I make decisions based on what’s best for my family.

My wife and I have decided that under the circumstances we need to live closer to our relatives.  And so we are moving back to the Dallas area.  We are doing this soon, as we would like to get it done before she get’s too big to travel.

As much as I’d like to remain in the video game industry that is probably not feasible given the state of it in the area that we are moving to.  Both my wife and I have already started to look for work in the area.  But one thing I have learned about looking for work is that knowing people in the right place can get a lot of opportunities.  Since I have a whole bunch of people who look at this site on a regular basis, I figured I’d ask here.  Do any of you know of any places hiring in the Dallas area?

I’m primarily looking for Graphic Design, and my wife is primarily looking for Web Design.  But we’ll take anything with health insurance.

Janice has 10 years of professional web and graphic design experience. You can view her site, including her portfolio and business blog, here.

I have over 10 years of experience using 2D graphics software, such as Adobe, and Corel products.  I spent 6 years doing graphic design work, and have worked in some seriously high stress environments with high standards for the final product, such as the Military and the game industry.  I was working on a graphic design portfolio when my power supply burned out.  I should be able to get a few work samples up within a week or so.  I also know most of the basics with MS Office, and I can be an office monkey do some clerical work too.   Also I can evidently write funny blog posts.  I’m not sure how many paying positions there are for that, but I’m willing to listen to any ideas.

No post today. I was busy being memorially.

Cinematic Greatness

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Sometimes, maybe once a generation or so, a movie comes along that transcends mere film. It isn’t a piece of celluloid, so much as it is a cultural event. More than that, a cultural shift. A movie that makes you reexamine you beliefs, and even your very self. A movie that will leave it’s permanent mark upon your soul.

The creators will find that magic combination that allows them to breath precious vitality into a story, and make it seem as real and as pertinent to you as events that you actually experienced for yourself. And for the rest of your life, you will be able to look back at the moment that you first sat down to watch it, and you will say to yourself:

“This. This was the moment that everything changed for me forever!”

Announcement And New List

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

A while ago my wife and I were approaching the anniversary of the day we started dating.  She asked me if I wanted anything special to commemorate the day.

I told her that I wanted either Milla Jovovich or a set of twins.

Sesos!

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

So last week I showed my readers that the zombie apocalypse had begun.  And this week Michael demonstrated that the problem has evidently been spreading.

Well I have recently realized that the problem is bigger and worse than originally suspected.

You see if you read the article I referenced, you will notice that the zombie in question yelled in Spanish at his victim.  Now we all know that zombies can’t talk.  But sometimes, when a victim has first been infected, they get a bit chompy, while still retaining a few shreds of their intellect.  This was clearly the case in New Orleans last week.

A Public Service Anouncement

Note from skippy

I actually had a pretty decent post prepared for this week, but I felt that the following needed to take priority.

You see, last week one of my readers expressed some opinions about condoms and AIDS in the comments section.  And I had some doubts as to the accuracy of these ideas.

And even though I feel that most people are smart enough to not take medical advice from the comments section of a humor blog, I decided that I would feel bad if even one person did.

Heck, I would feel bad if the person who posted the questionable comment suffered due to a misunderstanding.  And so I let my friend EC, who is a RN, issue some corrections.

I’m withdrawing my life savings and investing it all in canned goods and shotgun shells.

Game Developers Conference

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

So last week I got to attend the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, and thanks again to Michiel for covering for me while I was off doing that.

While I was there I jotted down some notes for things that I thought my readers might be interested in.

1) I used to go to school in San Francisco shortly after I got out of the Army.  And I used to walk everywhere I went.  I figured it would be a piece of cake to do the same thing this time around.

Unfortunately my hotel was in the North end of the city, and the Conference was somewhere in Southern Baja, Mexico.

Also, it turns out that the past five years of grueling video game design did not keep me in as good shape as I might have hoped.

April Fools

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Before I write my post today  I want to clear up one thing.  This morning someone commented that they were expecting me to do something for April Fools day.  I do not play April Fools pranks, for pretty much the same reasons that Woody Allen doesn’t go to open mike night.

Because that’s for amateurs.  Plus, like Woody, I am usually too busy doing immoral things to Asian teenagers.
