*It Totally Is
Me: What was the Jack Nicholson movie where he plays the likable crazy guy?
Wife: All of them?
Me: The one where he was a writer.
Wife: The Shining?
Me: The romantic comedy one.
Wife: As Good As It Gets.
Me: Got it. Thank you.
Wife: Why did you need to know?
Me: I had this idea. Imagine if Jack Nicholson’s character in “As Good As It Gets” was a guy who wrote anime instead of novels.
Wife: I’m not sure where you’re going with this.
Me: You would have one of his fans asking “How do you write women so well?” And Jack would go “I think of a man, and I take away reason and accountability. And then I violate her with tentacles. Many, many tentacles.”
Wife: …
Me: Admit it. You could totally imagine Jack Nicholson saying that.
Wife: Yeah….I guess I can. So you know that your brain is a scary, scary place, right?*

Our weather is just fine for 10 months out of the year thank you very much. But when July hits it reaches around 40 and our igloos melt and many of us are lost to polar bears.
Sequoia reply on October 9th, 2009 7:08 am:
Try coming to the UP. That is cold. Wisconsin is nice and warm, with little snow.
Random reply on October 9th, 2009 7:54 am:
The UP? Isn’t that that balmy region in the south? I’m from Canada, dammit. The region I’m in is the mildest I’ve ever seen – the temperature only averages about 20 degrees F in January, though it can spike to -4 and we get a lot of blizzards. Other places I’ve lived in had such charming details as groceries brought by skiplane once a week, and one memorable Christmas when the oil tank for our large-scale industrial generator froze solid. (We wound up sleeping with the huskies for warmth. I am not making this up.)
I am a Canadian stereotype.
Sequoia reply on October 9th, 2009 8:02 am:
Ah, one of the ones from the north? I respect your ability to live there. But not as much as if you were from Alaska.
Shadowydreamer reply on October 9th, 2009 8:13 am:
Tee hee, Random.. I, too, am a Canuck. But I’m not a REAL Canadian. My car doesn’t have a block heater, I see snow only a couple weeks a year unless I go up to the mountaains.. yes, it’s true, I’m near Vancouver.. Utopia! Mild weather (if you like rain) and still in Canada. :)
I survived 3.5 Edmonton winters. You can’t make me go back!!

My family is from Wisconsin. I’m the first to not be born in the noble land. Instead, I live next to the second largest by volume, and largest by surface area, lake in the world.

I’ve lived in Texas almost my whole life. When my South Dakota relatives told me about block heaters, I was flabbergasted. And when I found out that lakes can freeze solid enough to DRIVE on, I almost flipped out. Wow.
Coldest I’ve ever seen it here (Dallas) was 0 in 1989. Miserable! The buildings aren’t designed for it, and pipes froze up right and left.
Billy reply on October 10th, 2009 7:05 pm:
I’ve been to Texas, as much as they say everything is bigger there, it made me miss mountains. And it sucked. But then again, I hate the heat, because I’m a cold-blooded bastard.

Coming from Maryland, the northen most southern state, I thought that I’d seen some cold weather. HAH! A couple winters in the Rockies let me know that was a lie. Tuzla Bosnia could get a bit brisk too – I had a liter bottle of water freeze when I walked about a 1/4 mile in January ’98.
To experience Kuwait heat, get into your car in the summer after it’s been sitting in the 99 degree sun all day, windows up. Sit there and feel the moisture leach from your eyes. That’s Kuwait in August, in the shade. In Sept, it gets really humid, heh.

All I ever saw in school was “Donald Duck in Mathematic Land.” And the old Bell Telephone science films. In the Washington DC area too.

I thought it was “Donald Duck in Math-Magic Land”. It seemed like a so much cooler title that way.
Regardless, that movie is the only thing I remember from 9th grade Geometry.
In fact, that movie is probably all I remember from 9th grade period.

Math- MAGIC land! It’s been a few years. I saw it in geometry too, but my dumbass saw it in a higher grade.
Never did sing the quadratic forumla song. Now, if it had been on DC 101….

Derailment is the best way to win an argument. If one party uses logic to attempt to win, the best choice is to make up stuff until they are so confused that they forget the original argument and give up. When you cause their logic to fail, then their weapon of choice is broken.
