YES! I so agree about the drugging of our kids. It’s wrong and it’s dangerous. The young man that shot up Columbine High School was on Ridaline (or however you spell it). One of the side effects is manic behavior. How can anyone think that giving this drug (or any of the other mind altering drugs out there) to a child is a good thing?
I could go on for days about my dislike of psychotropic drugs and the psychiatry ‘profession’. However, since I’d probably start frothing at the mouth and turn into a raving maniac, I won’t.
I think.. like everything, psychiatry has its place. However, its being applied as a bandaid across every problem. We have a generation of parents who believe pills can solve everything. (Have a bug? Take antibiotics. Have a boy being a boy? Give him ritalin.)
In this neck of the woods, kids do their first four grades by merit. (ie, you may be doing year 1 reading while working year 3 math) but at the end of that, you’re thrown right back into the industrial rubber stamping machine. I’d like to see the whole kit and caboodle revolutionized. Surely we can change the education system from the industrial age to the computer age?
I remember when the shrink came around to my school as a kid to see who had ADHD. Unfortunately, that day I happened to be hyper. She tried to put me on drugs. I said no. My parents said no. She disagreed. I told her the only way she would get me to take drugs was to stuff them down my throat by hand and that I would bite her. She then said that I was anti-social and mal-adjusted. I countered that she was threatening me by trying to make me do something I thought was bad for me and that violent response was simply self defense. She decided it was best not to tangle with a middle school kid who can think like a lawyer.
Side-note, while I probably am anti-social and mal-adjusted, I am not “suffering” from anything, least of all ADHD. ;)
I read that in some school systems, the more learning impaired (like ADHD) students the school has, the more funding it gets. I am not an educator, so I don’t have any details. But this might explain why so many kids are getting placed on meds.

My 14 year old (in pre-engineering) really enjoyed that clip. He’s pretty sure he could come up with a 100 uses for a paper clip.
