President Obama appoints Barry White to the US Ambassadorship to Norway.

Evidently people are now getting appointments based entirely on how much fun SNL will have making fun of them.

Here is an example of his previous work in the diplomatic field.

When He broke the third seal, I heard the third living creature saying, “Come ” I looked, and behold, a black horse; and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand.

Oh well.  At least they’re not writing fan-fic.

Oxford, Alabama approved destroying an Ancient Indian burial mound for fill dirt for a new Wal-mart location.

If you’re reading this site, chances are you know how this one is going to end. With “Everyday low prices, and angry restless spirits out to wreak vengeance upon the living”.

And yes I realize that it’s a different Barry White. How many comments do you think I will get from people who don’t read this part?

my first thought upon reading the headline
“well, maybe he can sing to them” (We still listen to Barry White’s Christmas Album at my house, can you tell?)
I’m not sure if that’s good or bad

I can only make it to one furry con a year (RainFurrest is local. Yay!), but Midwest Furfest sounds like it was fun. 8)

    Cuter!

Actually, when VTAS (The Animation Society at Virginia Tech) started watching Tenchi Muyou! “raw” (no translation other than running commentary from people who knew Japanese), we didn’t know the term “cabbit”. I grabbed onto “Catbunny”, and have adopted the character as my alter-ego.

Okay, now I have a great movie idea. Thank you Catbunny. I need to go sell Zomfur the movie to SCI FI channel.

Calm down Minty. But I understand why you’re upset. Clearly the “more prettier” line was a typo.

We’re talking about a Wal-Mart affiliated chain in Alabama.

    It should read, “more purdier”

I know ambassadors with no diplomatic training get postings all the time, so why the hell do we bother having a diplomatic corps?

Now Furries, I just don’t know what to make of them. On the one hand, I think its one of the oddest damn things out there, on the other hand girls with tails are cute. My brain seems unwilling to give me a consensus on this one leaving me with a very annoying cognitive dissonace. The funniest part is that a guy I know asked me and a friend to mummify him in duck tape. Since I enjoy that kind of thing I didn’t ask any questions. Turns out we helped him make the patter for his “Blue wolf” fur suit. Now I’ve known this guy like four years, and if he has an animal side at all, he’s more like a damn bunny. No way is that boy a predator.

Oh, yeah, and Wal Mart can go fuck itself.

All the hate for Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club and
I doubt anyone noticed they are not building on the site of the mound. A local firm was contracted by a local council to prep the site of a future Sam’s club and are obtaining their fill-dirt from the mound. Crooked locals, yes but I doubt even walmart would want their name associated with this kind of controversy and wouldn’t be surprised to hear of them putting the pressure on the city government to either stop tearing up the mound for fill-dirt and get it elsewhere or to pull out of the project. Wal-Mart is not the big evil corporate entity that they are often made out to be but rather a company that does exactly what its customers want which is to provide them with low-priced/cheap goods and they have done it well enough to become the largest target out there next to the oil industry. Get off your high horses and blame the real culprits.

Good book on this is “The Wal-Mart Effect”. It doesn’t have much of a bias and has some good insight into how Wal-Mart operates, what its goals are, and the impact it has on the economy.

Like it or not, its a big piece of our world and its worth having an understanding of Wal-Mart it works.

I don’t mind Wal-Mart, what gets me riled is the people who deride Wally world for its business practices and putting the Mom and Pop stores out of business but are the same ones shopping at the local WalMart instead of the Mom and Pop stores. As to the ones who refuse to shop at a WalMart and only shop at local stores, more power to you and while I disagree with you at least you aren’t being hypocritical in your stance.

Minty reply on August 11th, 2009 9:03 am:

    1) I shop at as many mom and pop stores that I can for two reasons–one, their product quality is so much better than Wal-Mart’s (and Target’s and Kmart’s) that it’s worth spending the extra money. Two, they usually know something about their product, so if I have any questions, they can give me really good answers.

    2) While I have nothing against people being wildly successful, I do have something against people treating their employees like dirt, which Wal-Mart is notorious for.

    3) The fact that the inhabitants of a small town finds more value in building another box store than preserving a piece of American history (not to mention bulldozing a graveyard, no matter how old, for the same reason) speaks volumes about how screwed up our values are.

SKD reply on August 11th, 2009 9:38 am:

    @Minty

1)Good for you and I agree with your reasons for going to local enterprises

2)Prove the treating like dirt please, beyond the anecdotal. I have never personally experienced any Wally world employees with more than the typical discontent that comes with being a service industry worker who has to put up with “entitled” customers.

3)Yes and no. Everything I read pointed directly at the politicians not the average Joe on the street. I doubt most politicians ever had much in the way of values and unfortunately most things like this tend to happen before the average person ever knows it is taking place.

Unfortunately I have a hard time giving any documentary which attacks an issue, regardless of which side it is on, much credence these days as most do not look at things in a balanced manner and present the findings regardless of whether or not they agree with their preconceived opinions. Too much cherrypicking of a snippet here and a hair there without actually examining the broad picture.

Minty reply on August 11th, 2009 4:20 pm:

Which is why I provided you with the links to the website which backs up many of their facts with references. The movie itself, due to editing, is histrionic trash.

Stickfodder reply on August 11th, 2009 10:39 am:

Regardless I still want to shop at a haunted Walmart. Think about it, if all the stuff in the store was just flying around in one big circle you wouldn’t have to walk around to find stuff you’d just have to stand in one spot with a net to catch the stuff you want.

Actually, Wal-Mart has been known to close stores where the employees try to form a union (or join a pre-existing one)

SKD reply on August 11th, 2009 2:29 pm:

Doesn’t bother me a bit. Unions have outlived their usefulness and become a hindrance in most cases as far as I am concerned

SFC TC reply on August 12th, 2009 6:31 am:

But unions are such good things. Where would we be without them?

Look at the opportunities they have given. Now even the lowest paid manual labor guy can work hard and get elected into a leadership position where he or she too can formulate organizied crime connections, steal from pension funds, and buy off politicians. Just like the corporate executives (at least if you believe the unions).

Or if you would rather just get into straight up vioence of destruction you don’t have to be a union buster, heck they are all gone it seems anyway. Although the unions have a place for you too. Look at the treatment of “scabs” or “rats” by unions. Business owners who refuse to go union sometimes have alot of accidents. Its not like unions never have members go work for non-shop business and then sabotage jobs electrician union.

The Walmart thing sounds like what’s happening over here. Everyone’s having a fit that they’re planning to build one at the Wilderness battle site. It’s not really going to be right on top of it, just close. But now celebrities and the governor have an opinion.
